HELP A FELLOW BARBECUER

Welcome to the "Sound Off Section" for GAS GRILLS. Here you get to be the judge and jury! Let other barbecue enthusiasts know how you judge and rate the gas grill you are using. Please be sure to give readers the make and model of the gas grill. Identify it as propane or natural gas and some general comments (keep it clean!) and your overall impression of the grill. If you had to make certain changes or modifications to make it perform to your standards, that might also be helpful. Also, be sure to let us know if you would buy another one. Someday, we'll all get on the same page ... hopefully!

I am extremely unhappy with this grill and would NOT purchase another! Next time I'm going to be looking at a charcoal grill. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to vent!   I have a Charmglo "5 Star" Propane gas grill which was a gift in 1989. It has a number of weak points: 1. Burners rust/burn out at an incredible rate. I finally replaced them with an aftermarket cast iron burner which has lasted about seven or eight years. 2. The heat cannot be turned up enough to brown steaks and hamburgers for those of us that like our steaks really rare but charred on the outside. True with both origonal and replacement burners. 3. Uneven heating (hot spots) occur with both the origonal and replacement burners. 4. The electric fire starter lasted for about three weeks. 5. I can do up to a 12 pound turkey on the spit if it is tied very tightly. We need to be able to roast turkeys of twice that size. 6. The glass front is useless as it smokes up so badly. The front should be solid, not glass. I have replaced it with a stainless steel plate. We would have replaced this grill long ago but have not been able to find one that would provide a really hot fire for steaks - THE MOST USED AND MOST DESIRABLE FEATURE. We used the water pan and set the temp to approx 240 degrees, used 5 cups of moist hickory chips for the first hour and cooked the ribs a total of 6 hours. I'll put this Gas Masterbuilt unit against any method out there and beat them! I'm now totally convinced gas is better then wood or charcoal in all applications but mostly in control and convienence!   I have been using a Webber 1000 for about 5 years now, and am very happy with it. They eliminated the spider blocked gas lines by screening the openings. The 1000 is tall enough to cook a 20#+ turkey without touching the lid. I added a chamber thermometer to the one that came with it, and usually use 3 or 4 remote reading sensors when I do turkey. I usually do 10-15 turkeys a year and normally inject with a butter, honey, cinnamon and apple juice mixture. Keep temp around 275 deg., indirect, and loosly wrap some fruitwood chips in foil over the flames. Usually takes 3-4 hrs and can match or beat the best smoker. When it comes to ribs though, I'm afraid you can't beat smokin.

It has cast burners x 4 with individual controls. check out their web site. Definately a kick-ass grill.   Have spent the last several years cooking with gas. Its not that I specifically like gas, especially with the effectiveness of charcoal will placed (love the smell while cooking!!!), but it was far less maintenance for me. Anyways, the best way to manage (notice I said manage here) cooking with gas is to determine where the hot spots are. Even if the grill leans a little to the left or right, you can bet that the gas and heat will flow that way to provide a hot spot. Determine whether you are direct or indirect grilling (they both have thier benefits here) and choose you zone by holding you hand over different parts of the grill while heating. If you can't hold you hand there for a few seconds, things are way to hot---this is the direct grilling zone. Things will cook fast, really fast. Also take advantage of those upper racks that are included. These just arent for looks. Just like your oven, higher the rack is placed, the more surrounding heat occurs here (remember, heat rises..). Most of all, have patience...this is what produces the best meals!!!

It has very few hot spots and cooks quickly and evenly,... exactly what I would expect for the money I paid. If you want a bbq that cooks the way you expect, I wouldn't go past a BeefEater. It is a screen box that replaces all the plates. It is called Grill Mate (or Chefs Mate). It relies on principles of oxygen flow (without air you get no flame to burn food) that I won't go into but just go pick one up. You will never be without it. Juice and grease burn inside the box making smoke but the flames cant get out the tinier holes in the top (bottom holes are bigger) the flame will spread out like pouring pancake batter but cant come through the top holes.

I work at a hardware store in Toronto, Canada (Humbertown True Value) that sells Napoleon, Weber and Broil King, and will tell you that in the three years we've sold Napoleon that it's turned into our biggest seller - in fact, the big surprise is how many we've sold just from word of mouth from satisfied customers! It's also probably one of the best thought-out designs out there, with a galvanized frame (galvanized inside and out). I also happen to do BBQ construction, maintenance and repair for the shop, and find the Napoleon to be pretty durable in that regard. They're also quite innovative, what with their infrared rear burner (many of our customers say that's their favorite feature) and with last year's intro of the Charcoal Tray (a tray that fits in above the rear burner for loading charcoal). They've got some new stuff coming in 2002 that looks incredible. They now also have a new web site at www.napoleongrills.com - definitely check it out!

I purchased a Sunbeam Grillmaster model 760 propane grill almost a year ago to the day. I have never in my life seen such an absolute piece of junk. The week I bought it, the button for the electronic ignition came off, and the paint around the bottom of the casting started peeling. When the bbq ran, it would make an annoying whistling sound, and cook way too hot. You constantly had to spray water on the burner to keep the food from flaming out. Then the metal sunbeam emblem fell of the casting. About 2 weeks ago, I had been preheating the bbq for about 10 minutes. I walked out to open it, and the handle came off in my hand! (Actually burned me quite badly). It had melted off the lid. Then, I noticed that the unit was so hot, that it actually warped the upper portion of the lid, so that it would no longer close correctly. This barbeque was over $300.00, and I would warn anyone even considering it to walk away and don't look back! I have a Thermos that was made in 84 that is in far better shape than this POS!

Eli- I bought the Jennair 4 burner BBQ JA461 from Lowes for 599$ in May. I think it has the best looking/functional design out there. 4 burners, totally enclosed lower cabinet, 2 condiment holders, wheels, two large side storage areas and the optional side burner fits right in while allowing use of the side tray when not in use. This thing just looks cool with the stainless and enamel. Only problem so far- I have noticed that some of the paint on the lower INSIDE of the lid is peeling off. Not making alot of noise about it as it is not visible nor impacting performance. But just the same one would not expect this kind of problem on a relatively new BBQ. Should be covered by the warranty although have not pursued it yet. Would reccomend it at this point.

1017.1 Last spring, I purchased the recently released Charbroil Professional Series stainless steel grill. For 1/4 the price and similar looks of a Viking or DCS, I think it is a great buy. I've owned Charbroils and Webers in the past. I absolutely love this grill. Looking for others who may have bought one of these. I had one problem that was covered under warranty. Couldn't run more than three burners (out of 5) at a time. The thing was so new, the support people took 5 months and 4 attempts before guessing the regulator was bad (which I tried to tell them from the beginning!). In the meantime, I got an extra burner, full valve manifold and another spare part (I forgot what) to keep on hand if those ever fail. Oh yeah, I got the new regulator too. I offered to send the other parts back but they let me keep them anyway. The support people got to know me by first name! One thing that is inherent in Charbroil grills that I would love to change is the flavor grate. Great for steaks but a pain with ribs and chicken if you don't keep it clean. I prefer the Weber design because it produces fewer and more managable flareups. Don't know if I should just buy some and see how they work. Anyone try this? Cheers! JP
